Spanspek
The rockmelon, cantaloupe, sweet melon, or spanspek is a melon that is a variety of the muskmelon family. It is a fruit popular with children and adults alike, due to its watery sweet flesh.

According to the legend from the couple's (Lady Juana's and her husband, Sir Henry Smith) South African years Sir Harry loved bacon and eggs for breakfast. Lady Juana, on the other hand, didn't like bacon and preferred cantaloupe melons. In the Smith household, these melons were soon known as the ˜Spanish bacon', or ˜die Spaans se spek' in Afrikaans. This is how this particular type of melon got the name 'spanspek' in South Africa.
